Gonzo journalist shoots "Shining" remake at deserted corporate hotel

Couldn't pass up mentioning this...

Gonzo journalist Gideon Television, recently realizing that Starwood's corporate hotel Aloft was completely empty one night, called over a few friends and created a completely unauthorized remake of horror movie The Shining there; Gideon has the hilarious results up at his blog right now. It's a nice way, I think, to make a subtle political point about corporate involvement in SL (that is, the fact that most corporate experiments there end up deserted just a few weeks after their opening), while still being funny and original, and also showing why Gideon deserves the title "gonzo journalist" in the first place. (As you can tell, I'm a closet fan of the sometimes outrageously offensive writer.) I encourage you to go check it out, if you have a few spare minutes today, and certainly before Aloft's lawyers send the inevitable cease-and-desist letter. More of this stuff please, Gideon, and less about dead virtual hookers!

Hey Jason, thanks for pointing this out. Always fun to see these kinds of activities. You might love this picture Cory and Ingrid took back in August or September along the same lines -- totally cracked me up:

From a business perspective, keep in mind that the aloft hotel is not meant to be consumer destination. So many people are oversimplifying the motivations for businesses experimenting in SL -- not everything is a mass marketing consumer entertainment gig. The way aloft has used SL for feedback and a new step in the R&D process I think is really interesting. We have been updating the interior a bit lately for another round of consumer feedback.
