The book the poetry-slam community doesn't want you to see! Well, maybe not, but it's a pretty fun book nonetheless. Based on my experiences in the poetry slam, a type of literary competition that has grown in popularity around the world, I wrote a book in 1998 basically theorizing that one can take a few simple steps that can actively manipulate an audience's expectations and guarantee you higher scores within the competition. I then describe the steps in detail - everything from making your poem two minutes and fifty-nine seconds in length to incorporating rhythm and rhyme into your work whenever possible. The book has since become a cult favorite within the slam community, and several teams now use the lessons spelled out on a serious basis to consistently win their heats at the national competition.
